Need the Paycheck
But the Job Is Wearing You Down?

Protect yourself while you are still there. Prepare to leave on your own terms.

A practical $17 field guide for people who cannot afford to quit tomorrow. Learn what to notice, what to document, what to say, what to stop absorbing, and how to prepare your next move.

Sunday afternoon, and Monday has already started in your head. Nothing has actually happened yet, but the dread is creeping in. You check tomorrow's calendar, see that name, and your mind immediately starts rehearsing 101 ways the meeting could go wrong.

You prepare your facts. You rehearse the conversation in the shower. You tell yourself that this time you will stay calm and say exactly what needs to be said. Then the meeting happens.

And somehow, you still walk out wondering: “Wait… was I the problem?”

Maybe Nothing “Dramatic” Happened. And That Is Part of the Problem.

Someone took credit for your idea in a meeting and smiled while they did it. You raised a real concern and somehow walked out apologizing. Expectations changed after you had already met them. A conversation everyone heard is suddenly remembered differently when remembering it accurately becomes inconvenient.

You come home carrying the day with you. You snap at people who did nothing wrong because there was nowhere else for the frustration to go. You lie in bed replaying conversations that ended hours ago, and you have not told anyone the full story because, said out loud, each incident somehow sounds smaller than it felt.

Eventually, quietly, you begin asking whether you are too sensitive. Whether you are difficult. Whether this is simply what working life is like.

Before you decide that, learn to see what is actually happening.

Some workplace conflicts are ordinary disagreements. Some bosses are simply difficult. Sometimes we misunderstand people. But unhealthy workplaces also produce recognizable patterns: disappearing credit, moving goalposts, selective information, deniable intimidation, favourites who become untouchable, and competent people who become dumping grounds for everyone else's work.

Once you can recognize the pattern, the question can change from “What is wrong with me?” to “What exactly happened here, and what should I do next?”

What changes when you have a strategy

The advice everyone gives

“Just Quit” Sounds Simple Until You Are the One Who Has to Pay the Bills.

People love saying, “Life is too short. Just leave and find something better.” I used to hear that too.

But are they going to pay your mortgage next month? Your insurance? Your parents' expenses? Your groceries? Your children's school fees?

Of course not.

Knowing that a workplace is hurting you and being financially, professionally and emotionally ready to leave are two completely different things.

Then someone says, “Everywhere is the same.” Now leaving feels frightening too. You imagine updating your résumé, sitting in front of interviewers, explaining yourself, being judged all over again, and wondering whether you will simply end up in another version of the same place.

So you stay. Not necessarily because you want to. Sometimes staying simply feels safer than jumping into something you cannot see yet.

I understand that uncomfortable middle. I lived there for a very long time.
A note from me, not a brand

I Spent 25 Years Learning This the Hard Way.

I am not a therapist. I do not have a psychology degree hanging on a wall somewhere.

What I do have is twenty-five years of working across IT, banking, healthcare and childcare. Four industries that looked completely different on paper, yet somehow I kept meeting variations of the same people, the same politics and the same tactics.

I managed several multi-million-dollar projects. I became the person who was given the unglamorous work nobody else wanted. The projects that were too important to fail, but somehow not glamorous enough for anyone to remember who carried them once they succeeded.

I sat through meetings that started with “let's reflect” and somehow ended with another responsibility landing on my desk. I watched people get recognition for work I had carried. I watched the favourite get the biggest bonus while my own annual increment amounted to $60 for the entire year.

Yes. Sixty dollars.

That was my last straw.

For years, I thought the answer was to work harder. Be more useful. Prepare more thoroughly. Stay professional. Do not give anyone a reason to question my work. I genuinely believed that if I became valuable enough, eventually that value would be recognized.

It took me far too long to realize that I was asking the wrong question.

It was no longer, “How do I prove that I deserve to be here?” It became, “Why am I working this hard to prove my value to an environment that has already shown me how little it intends to value it?”

That realization changed the way I saw everything.

I knew what I had delivered. I knew the projects I had carried, the problems I had solved and the responsibilities people trusted me with when failure was not an option.

I started to realize that the company did not get to decide what I was worth. I no longer had to keep giving more and more of myself to prove something I already knew.

Then something changed

I Stopped Trying to Fix the Workplace.

I started protecting myself inside it.

I began paying attention to patterns instead of reacting to every incident as though it were happening for the first time. I became much more deliberate about what I documented, what I confirmed in writing, what I agreed to immediately and what deserved nothing more than a calm response.

I stopped walking into every difficult conversation hoping that if I explained myself perfectly, the other person would finally understand.

Sometimes understanding was never the point.

Sometimes I simply needed to leave the meeting knowing that my position was clear, my work was protected and I had not handed the rest of my day over to somebody else's behaviour.

Slowly, the same meetings that used to consume my entire evening stopped having the same power over me.

The people had not changed. I had.

By then, I was already doing what eventually became Parts 3 and 4 of this guide.

I kept my receipts. I prepared my exit. I quietly created options while continuing to do my job properly.

And yes, I started attending some of those meetings smiling.

Not the fake smile of someone pretending everything was fine. It was the smile of someone who finally knew, you do not get to decide my future anymore.

For the First Time, Leaving Did Not Feel Like Escaping.

It felt like choosing.

I knew I was preparing myself to walk into another company, another industry or another room full of unfamiliar people without carrying all of these people with me in my head.

Would I still feel anxious sometimes? Of course. I still expect a lot from myself. I still want to do good work. I can still put pressure on myself because I care about what I deliver.

But I wanted my anxiety to come from my own expectations of myself, not from spending every day trying to predict somebody else's politics, moods or next move.

That distinction mattered enormously to me.

I did not need to become fearless. I needed to know that wherever I went next, I would be better equipped. I could recognize the patterns earlier. I could protect myself sooner. I could stop confusing somebody else's behaviour with my own value.

That is the place I want Corporate Hostage to help you reach.

Not a place where you become cold. Not a place where you assume everyone is toxic. Not even a place where you decide that you must quit.

A place where your workplace no longer feels like it owns all of your choices.

See what is happening. Protect yourself. Build your options quietly. Then decide what comes next when you are ready.

Meet the Office Zoo.

Some of these characters may feel uncomfortably familiar.

🦊

The Puppeteer

Warm, smiling, remembers your birthday, and somehow you keep leaving conversations having volunteered for something you never intended to do. She rarely orders. She recruits: “There is no one else I trust to do this.”

🐜

The Fixer

If you are reading this, there is a real chance this one is you. Competent, reliable and conscientious, absorbing the tasks nobody else wanted. Eventually, competence gets rewarded with… more work.

🐦‍⬛

The Broker

Knows everyone, not in a friendly way, in a useful way. Information moves through the Broker before it moves anywhere else, and the Broker understands that information is power.

Eight more inside, plus what changes when the character is your peer, outranks you, or is the person deciding your performance rating.

You Still Need the Paycheck. The Job Does Not Get Unlimited Access to You.

Corporate Hostage cannot turn a toxic boss into a wonderful one. It cannot make office politics disappear, and it cannot promise that everything will suddenly become fair.

What it can give you is something I desperately wanted while living through this: a framework.

  • A way to recognize recurring behaviour instead of endlessly decoding it.
  • Language for things that previously just felt “off.”
  • Scripts for moments when you normally freeze.
  • A method for protecting your paper trail.
  • A plan for building your exit before desperation builds it for you.

The goal is not to become better at tolerating misery forever. The goal is to get your choices back.

Why only $17?

Because a Survival Guide Should Not Become Another Financial Problem.

I priced this deliberately. The people who may need it most are often the same people who cannot simply walk away from a paycheck. Charging a premium price to someone stuck partly because of financial obligations felt wrong to me.

Common questions

Still Wondering If This Is For You?

“What if my workplace isn't THAT toxic?”

It does not have to be dramatic. Some of the hardest situations are the slow, deniable ones: disappearing credit, selectively forgotten conversations, backhanded apologies and expectations that change after you meet them. Those are exactly the situations this guide addresses.

“What if it really is me?”

Understanding the situation more clearly is still useful. This guide does not assume you are automatically right and everyone around you is automatically wrong. It gives you frameworks for recognizing patterns, separating ordinary conflict from more concerning behaviour, and deciding what deserves a response.

“Is this legal advice?”

No. Corporate Hostage discusses general workplace patterns and documentation practices in plain language. When a situation may require employment specific guidance, a qualified professional or relevant local authority is the appropriate next step.

“Is this a therapy replacement?”

No. If your experience is seriously affecting your mental or physical wellbeing, professional support may be appropriate alongside practical workplace strategies.

“What happens right after I pay?”

You receive instant access to the complete digital guide and included bonuses as downloadable files. Purchases made by 31 October 2026 also receive The Workplace Boundary Playbook, a separate practical companion with worksheets, templates and trackers. No waiting and no subscription.

“Is The Workplace Boundary Playbook a permanent bonus?”

No. It is an October promotional bonus included with purchases made by 31 October 2026. After that date, it will no longer be included in this offer.

“What is the refund policy?”

Because this is a digital product delivered immediately, purchases are final. Please review everything included on this page before purchasing.

One last thing

You Do Not Need to Reach Breaking Point Before Giving Yourself Permission to Go.

I cannot promise Corporate Hostage will fix your workplace. No book can control another person's behaviour, and not every difficult interaction means somebody is deliberately manipulating you.

But once you can recognize recurring patterns, you can become more deliberate about what you document, what you respond to, what you stop absorbing, and what you do next.

Maybe your next step is leaving. Maybe it is not yet. Either way, you deserve to make that decision with your eyes open, not after one terrible Tuesday finally pushes you past your limit.

Survive first.
Protect yourself deliberately.
Build your options quietly.
Leave when you are ready.

I made it through mine. I sincerely hope this helps you get through yours faster.

Truly talks about my workplaces

This is so true! It's so dread to go to work and yet I need to pay all my bills and debts, this really helps me get through while I prepare to look for another job and I know I will also survive another place.
Everywhere is not the same, people! If someone tells you that when you talked about wanting to leave, they want you to be stuck with them.
Thank you Phoebe for this Zoo Guide.

My playbook at work

This "zoo guide" is so helpful and it helps me now at work. I no longer think it's my problem and I learn to realize who are the animals around me and the tricks they play. It is empowering that now I know I no longer the problem, I was just a pushover.
I tried one of the counter to someone I really don't like to work with and he is now able to work with..at least for me.
